Timing
Your painting could be ready in as little as six to eight weeks. Kate will give you an indication of timing after discussing your request.
When commissioning a portrait with a specific deadline, we recommend getting in touch at least 3 months in advance to avoid disappointment. Kate will do her best to accommodate your wishes wherever possible.
Timing depends on current workload plus the size and complexity of your portrait. Once completed, oil paintings take approximately two weeks to dry.

Choosing a reference photo
Size + resolution
Please send clear, high resolution photographs. A photo taken with a smart phone is usually fine. Note that photos shared through some apps such as whatsapp are automatically reduced in size so should be avoided. Please send original full sized photographs.
Expression
When choosing a photo, consider the facial expression and eye direction.
Eyes: A subject with the eyes looking away can result in a beautiful portrait with a serenity that is very comfortable and inviting to look at. Usually we look directly at the camera when taking photos. This can result in an engaging but sometimes confronting portrait. Consider whether you want your portrait to stare straight back at you or not.
Smile: In photographs, we typically give a wide smile showing our teeth. For a painting, I recommend choosing a photo with a closed mouth. Relaxed or even serious expressions generally make the most beautiful portraits.
Lighting
The best photographs for oil portraits show the subject lit from one direction (usually one side) with a high contrast between the light and dark areas of the face. A brightly lit photo can result in flatter looking features.
Avoid
Avoid photos where features are blurred or the subject is in shadow. If you're not sure, just send your favourite photos and I can help you choose.
Send at least 3 photographs to info@kmcakes.nl stating your name and email address.

An ideal photo reference.
