Portret in opdracht

Kate uses the time-honoured technique of oil on canvas to capture beautiful memories of your loved ones for you to cherish for years to come.
The tradition of bespoke portrait painting is a wonderful way to capture yourself, your partner or (grand) children and makes a wonderful personalised gift.
A portrait is an artwork to enjoy now and an heirloom to pass down
through the generations.
Celebrate a wedding, birthday, anniversary or achievement with a custom art painting as a truly original gift or as a meaningful commemoration in honour of a loved one posthumously.

Process behind the portrait
1. Begin by letting us know your wishes by getting in touch via the form below. Kate will paint your commission portrait using photographs to save you the time and discomfort of sitting still for many hours. We'll ask you to share at least 3 clear photographs to ensure an accurate likeness.
2. Kate will then be in touch to discuss your wishes for your portrait, discuss timings and to identify a key image from which to base the structure of the work.
3. When you are happy with the proposal and payment has been received, Kate will begin work on your bespoke artwork.
4. We want you to love your portrait, so when the artwork is nearing completion, you will receive photos for your approval.
5. Once complete, your custom portrait painting will need to dry for around two weeks before being collected or shipped.
6. Should you require to have your portrait framed, we can assist with this.
7. Enjoy your unique artwork for years to come.

Timing
Your painting could be ready in as little as four to six weeks. Timing depends on current workload plus the size and complexity of your portrait. Once completed, oil paintings take approximately two weeks to dry.
Kate will give you an indication of timing when she knows more about your wishes. When commissioning a portrait with a specific deadline, we recommend getting in touch at least 3 months in advance to avoid disappointment. Of course a specific deadline can be taken into consideration and Kate will do her best to accommodate your wishes where possible.

Sending a photo
Size + resolution
Please send clear, high resolution photographs. A photo taken with a smart phone is usually fine. Note that some apps such as whatsapp automatically reduce file size. It's best to send the original full sized photographs for Kate to work from.
Smile
When choosing a photo, think about whether you want the subject smiling or with a more relaxed expression. In a photograph, it's lovely to see a wide smile, but in a painting, a big grin can look toothy. A smaller smile, closed mouth or even serious expression can make a beautiful portrait.
Lighting
The best photographs for oil portraits show the subject close by and lit from one direction (usually one side) with a high contrast between the light and dark areas of the face. A brightly lit photo can also make a lovely portrait but be aware that this will result in flatter looking features (see below). Avoid photos that are very dull or with strong shadows across the face.

Painting from a photograph lit from one direction with high contrast. The face looks well rounded with features such as cheeks and nose well defined.

Painting lit brightly from multiple directions with low contrast. The 3D look of the face is reduced and the resulting painting is flatter looking.
Send at least 3 photographs to info@kmcakes.nl stating your name and email address.
